What is difference between
Mass and Weight ?
What is difference between mass and weight?
Some people think mass and weight both are same. They does not understand different between it . But there is a huge difference between it . This is not similar thing. So, let's know how is mass different from weight.
Mass
Mass is that physical quantity which measure the amount of matter contained it .
Mass of the body does not changes due to presence of any medium or field. That means Mass of a body remains same everywhere. for eg ( in Space , On earth ) .
Other definition : Mass is the product of volume and density of the body.
Mass=Volume*Density
- Its SI unit is Kilogram(kg).
- Its CGS unit is Gram(g).
- 1 Kg = 1000 g
- It is measured by simple physical balance.
- It is scalar quantity.
Weight is that force by which the gravity attracts the object toward the Earth. Or in other word : Weight refers to the force exerted on an object by gravity.
Weight of the body changes due to presence of any medium or field. Weight of a body changes by changing of value of g (g =9.8 m/s^2 ).
Weight of the body is zero in the space.(g=0 in space)
Weight = Mass of the body * Force exerted on body by gravity
W = Mg
- Its SI unit is Newton(N).
- Its CGS unit is Dyne.
- 1 N = 100000 dyne.
- It is measured by Spring balance.
- It is vector quantity.
For example ,let suppose a body of mass 10 kg.
In space , Weight of the body is zero in the space.(g=0 in space) .
In space , Weight of the body is zero in the space.(g=0 in space) .
m=10kg g=0 m/s^2
Therefore, w= mg= 10*0 = 0 N
but Mass remains same that is 10 kg in the space.
